The Organization

How is the project involved with the community?

The organization is dedicated to promoting volunteer work in protected areas by supporting their conservation and development efforts. Currently it has developed conservation activities in 30 different areas of the country.

It also supports ventures that incorporate the responsible use of Costa Rica's natural resources towards ecotourism, i.e. the responsible observation and handling of flora and fauna. Over the years, this has proved its effectiveness as the work extends to three strategic areas: investigation, education and conservation.

Every year, the project welcomes 800 international volunteers to its conservation projects, plus another 1000 Costa Ricans.

Background to the project and its aims?

Teaching English as a second language is extremely important in this country, where tourism is one of the main sources of income. With roughly 25% of Costa Rica's land under protection, these areas have become an important focus point of eco-tourism activities. International visitors are able to admire the lush tropical forests, while enjoying the friendly treatment by Ticos. By enabling the local people to communicate in English, they can offer a better level of service to tourists, thus growing and expanding their sustainable economy.

Over the years, the organization has timely opened English teaching projects in rural communities that surround those protected areas and that constantly attract tourists.

The project's main objectives are:

  • Support the rural school of the area with English teachers for elementary students, using the support of international volunteers.
  • To immerse a volunteer with a multicultural experience of customs and traditions of rural Costa Rica.
  • To undertake various workshops and activities apart from the academic subjects. Such as arts and crafts, music, dance, sports, and environmental activities.

What are the daily volunteer activities in the project?

  • Teaching English and other subjects at the town school.
  • Prepare instructive material in advance in order to teach.
  • Get involved in school activities.
  • Support the other school teachers and staff in other school activities.
  • Prepare and deliver workshops and activities in the afternoons.
  • Help with cleaning, maintenance and general hygiene of the school.
