The Organization

How is the Organization involved with the community?

The project provides safe shelter, education, healthcare, and other services to young single mothers who are either pregnant or who have young children. Along with this, the shelter offers emotional and educational support to help the women move from crisis and poverty to steady jobs and/or continuing education while at and after they leave the program and shelter. The main objective of the program is to help the women be able to attain self sufficiency. Due to their status as women, as poor, as mothers out of wedlock, and for many, as indigenous, this target population faces many forms of discrimination.

Why does the project need volunteers and what are the daily volunteer activities in the project?

The women at the project are often cast out by their communities; they are left with little resources for themselves and their children. The home ensures that women are looked after until they are ready to leave the home, and that they have the proper skills needed to be independent mothers.

The organization seeks volunteers with skills to teach English, to ensure their sustainable gardening projects are maintained and to teach the women income generating skills, such as handicrafts or natural products.

Daily activities include:

  • Planning and implementing income generation projects
  • Teaching English
  • Assistance in the nursery
  • Assistance in the garden
