The Organization

How is the Organization involved with the community?

The project focuses on the conservation and the protection of Amazonian flora and fauna. The animal rescue center solely hosts Amazonian wildlife, having a variety of animals including of primates, cats, rodents, and a diversity of birds and reptiles and other small mammals.

The Center receives animals from the Ecuadorian Environmental Ministry, which have been confiscated from illegal trafficking, or donated from “owners” who had kept them as pets. These animals are evaluated by dedicated and experienced staff to see if they can ever be released back into the wild. If that is improbably, the animals are given the best conditions to live in, as similar to their natural habitat as possible.

In addition to the center, the project has 40 protected hectares (98 acres) of primary forest, where wild species can naturally live, be released, and research can be conducted.

Background to the project and its aims?

The organization began its volunteer program to help support the Animal Rescue Center due to a lack of government support and high maintenance expenses.

A constant influx of seized, donated, and abandoned animal and plant species find their way through the Rescue Center's doors. Through animal rehabilitation and environmental education programs, the project hopes to raise the awareness of the role played by the Center in the conservation of flora and fauna in the Amazon, as well as sustainable development and ecotourism.

What are the daily volunteer activities in the project?

Volunteers work with the animals in their daily routines. They feed the animals, clean the enclosures, and provide environmental or food-related enrichment. Volunteers also take part in other tasks like building and repairing enclosures, general maintenance around the center, gardening, reforestation, and small-scale agriculture and farming.

Example of an average day's itinerary:

  • 08:00: Breakfast
  • 08:30: Volunteer and staff meeting to assign groups to different activities, as well as feeding time for the animals. Work till noon followed by a one hour break.
  • 13:00: Lunch, followed by free time.
  • 14:30: Volunteers and staff meet, organize additional activities, and prepare food for the animals. Work until 17:00.
  • 17:00: Volunteer free time. Relax, hang out, enjoy your hobbies, hit up the jacuzzi or pool.

Volunteers are required to assist in the center from Monday morning until Saturday morning, until the animals have been fed.
